The overall focus of the programme builds on existing networks and specifically those areas where improvements can be achieved within existing resources, and reinforcing the network links with the regional Trauma Units (TU) and Local Emergency Hospitals (LEH). Much has been achieved in the West of Scotland in the two years since the commitment to proceed with a National Trauma system. Trauma Units will provide most of the care and treatment for those trauma patients who do not require the services of the major trauma centre, but who do require highly skilled specialists offering immediate care and treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The MTC is supported by Trauma Units and Local Hospitals. The trauma network also makes appropriate links, via the NHS Boards, to social care and the voluntary sector. The network provides all aspects of trauma care, from the point of injury to rehabilitation, in the region.Īt the heart of the regional network, is the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) which is sited at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) and Royal Hospital for Children (RHC) in Glasgow which provides care for around 1,000 critically and severely injured patients per annum. The Boards which participate in the regional network are: The West of Scotland Trauma Network is a collaboration of 6 NHS Boards and the Scottish Ambulance Service. The model for West of Scotland trauma network has been drawn together to deliver the agreed standards and benefits as set out in the National Framework for Trauma. The West of Scotland provides emergency services to a population of 2.7m with access to services currently through 27 Emergency Department/Urgent Care Centres. ![]()
